I am redoing this whole page since I have change my list of technology as of
late. I recently gotten a new laptop with USB and no serial ports,
on this computer I am leaving it with windows, Linux will be used for my home
computer only. Also I got the new Palm Pilot Tungsten T.
Changes from the last version of the page that can be found here
are this

Adaptor for the palm pilot |
Serial to USB adaptor to the laptop
The the serial cable to the adaptor
Adaptor for the palm pilot |
First the Laptop connecting to the SprintPCS wireless web network. I went
to Cables2go for a serial to USB adaptor, because my laptop does not have a
serial port. This should not affect how to do it at all, the cable created
a new com port on the computer (in this case com 4.)
First you will want to install the cell phone as a modem (if you did the cable
adaptor as stated above you will want to follow the instructions that come with
it to add the new com port)
To do this in XP you will want to go the the network connections control panel and make a new connection. Then you will want to make a new connection to
an ISP. You will want to do this manually. You will want to do
the connect via modem. Select the Cell phone modem you just setup.
Here you will want to give the new connection a name I called mine
SprintPCS. Now here you want to enter "#2932" as the phone
number. Next you will enter the username and password, the username and
password are both "web" turn off the following checkboxes: "Use
this account name and password when anyone connects to the internet from this
computer" and "Make this the default Internet connection" I
would leave the firewall in.
Now to connect the Palm Pilot to the internet via the cell phone. This
is known to work with SprintPCS, I believe it should work with any cell phone
company that offers the wireless web, I will refer to the phone number for
SprintPCS you will just have to find the number for your carrier. Also I
will be looking at a PalmOS 5.x device, if you want a earlier version take a
look at what is on this page and at this page for the
device specific information.
First you have to define the modem, I have found that a CDMA phone does not work
with the built in GSM phone driver, but the built in modem driver does work very
well with the CDMA. So first lets define the connection type.
First you want to go to the Preferences program. Once you are there you
will want to select the "Communication" set of preferences. At
this point you should see a list of about 4 options, you will want to select Connection. At this point you will want to make a new connection type, so
go ahead and select the "New..." button. and here are how you
want to set the options
| Connect to: |
Modem |
| Via: |
Cradle/Cable |
| Dialing: |
Touch-Tone |
| Volume: |
(what ever you want, you will not get sound, or should not) |
You will want to go into the Details now, and select the speed for your cell
phone (on a CDMA phone it will be 19,200) No "OK" out of both of
the screens. Now you should see at the bottom of this list the new
"Cell Phone" entry. Go ahead and slect Done. Now it
is time to define the "Network". You will be making a new
one. and you will want the following options. These optoins are only
for SprintPCS only, check with your carrier for your options
| Service |
SprintPCS |
| User Name |
web |
| Password |
web |
| Connection |
Cell Phone (the one we made just above) |
| Phone |
#2932 (remember to include the pound sign) |
We now have the Network setup. Now you can plug your cell phone in and
connect to the internet on your palm pilot. But to connect is not good
unless you have software to utilize it for you, well I have a list of programs
bellow for you to try out while online with your palm.
Avantgo
WebPro (For PalmOS 5.0 devices only such as the Tungsten T, comes on the 2nd CD)
AIM (yes aol's instant messanger)
Eudora E-mail program
If you have any other suggestions for good internet programs for the Palm
Pilot email me at mpop@mikeoconnor.net
